What is the Oil & Gas Industry?

The Oil & Gas industry is one of the fundamental pillars of the global economy, providing energy and raw materials essential for transportation, industrial production, and power generation. This industry is structured into three main segments: upstream, midstream, and downstream. Upstream includes exploration and production activities for oil and natural gas, such as reservoir discovery, drilling, and extraction. Midstream focuses on transportation and storage through pipelines, tankers, and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminals. Finally, downstream involves refining crude oil, processing natural gas, and distributing finished products such as fuels, lubricants, and petrochemical derivatives.

The strategic importance of this sector is clear: oil and natural gas still account for a significant share of global energy demand, despite the growing focus on renewable sources. However, the industry faces major challenges today. The energy transition is driving efforts to reduce emissions and increase the use of natural gas, considered a cleaner alternative to coal and oil. At the same time, investments are being made in innovative technologies such as Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) and hydrogen to make processes more sustainable.

Another key trend is digitalization: the adoption of IoT systems, artificial intelligence, and predictive maintenance improves operational efficiency and reduces risks. Safety remains a top priority, both for asset protection and environmental stewardship.

Despite these complexities, Oil & Gas industry maintains a central role in the energy transition, acting as a bridge toward a more sustainable future. Natural gas is expected to grow as a primary energy source, while companies invest in low-emission solutions and new opportunities such as biofuels and green hydrogen. In summary, the Oil & Gas industry is evolving on one hand, it must ensure global energy supply; on the other, it must innovate to meet the environmental and technological challenges of the 21st century.

TMIC Gas Ends: Main Applications

TMIC Gas Ends are designed to meet the diverse compression needs of the Oil & Gas industry, delivering reliability and efficiency across multiple applications. From boosting wellhead gas pressure to recovering vapors, supporting natural gas gathering systems, and managing boil-off gas in cryogenic storage, our solutions ensure optimal performance in challenging environments. Built for durability and sustainability, TMIC compressors help operators reduce emissions, maximize resource utilization, and maintain continuous operations.

Wellhead Gas

The wellhead is the point where natural gas (often mixed with liquids and condensates) exits the well. At this stage, the gas pressure may be too low to enter the gathering system, feed a processing plant, or be sent into the main pipeline. This is where the screw compressor comes in — it boosts the gas pressure to maintain a steady flow downstream

The screw compressor’s job is to:

  • Draw in low-pressure gas;
  • Compress it to a higher pressure;
  • Ensure continuous gas transfer toward the gathering or processing system;

It is especially valuable for mature or declining wells, where the natural reservoir pressure is no longer sufficient to move the gas on its own.

Advantages of using our Gas End in Wellhead Applications:

  • Excellent performance with variable flow rates and small liquid content.
  • Continuous, pulsation-free operation.
  • Low maintenance compared to reciprocating compressors.
  • High volumetric efficiency even at low suction pressures.
  • Can operate in remote locations with automatic skid-mounted systems.

Vapor Recovery Units (VRU)

Vapor Recovery Unit (VRU) is a system designed to recover hydrocarbon vapors (such as gasoline, LPG, crude oil vapors, etc.) generated during storage, loading/unloading, or transport operations. The goal is to prevent emissions to the atmosphere and recover useful products. Inside a VRU, the screw compressor is the core of the vapor compression system. It sucks in low-pressure vapors from tanks or loading lines and compresses them to a higher pressure to allow Condensation (liquid recovery), or Recirculation into the process (e.g., return to storage tanks or absorption systems).

Advantages of using our Gas End in VRUs:

  • Continuous, pulsation-free operation (unlike reciprocating compressors).
  • Low maintenance.
  • High volumetric efficiency, even with light hydrocarbons.
  • Can handle variable flow rates and vapors containing small liquid fractions (within limits).

In downstream applications, our compressors enable efficient gas recovery, minimizing emissions and maximizing resource utilization. TMIC solutions are engineered for compliance and sustainability.

Gas Boosting System

When gas is produced from multiple wells, it flows through small pipelines (called flowlines) to a central gathering system. At this stage, the gas has low and variable pressure, contains liquids, water, or condensates and often needs compression to move efficiently through the pipelines to a processing plant or main pipeline.

Advantages of Using our Gas End in Gas Gathering System:

  • Extends well life (enables production at low reservoir pressures).
  • Reduces flaring or venting losses.
  • Increases the throughput of the gathering system.
  • Allows economic recovery of marginal wells.
  • Provides stable and controllable gas flow to downstream facilities.

TMIC gas ends are a trusted choice for natural gas and gas boosting systems compression. Our robust design ensures reliable operation in continuous-duty environments, supporting energy production and distribution with maximum efficiency.

Shale Gas/Tight Gas

Shale gas and tight gas are forms of unconventional natural gas trapped in low-permeability rock formations.
To extract them, operators use horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to create pathways for the gas to flow. However, after fracturing, the reservoir pressure declines quickly — often much faster than in conventional fields. Because of this, compressors are needed early in the field to keep gas flowing from the wellhead into the gathering system.

Advantages of Using our Gas End in a Shale/Tight Gas System:

  • Extends economic well life by maintaining flow.
  • Reduces flaring and venting.
  • Increases recovery efficiency of the reservoir.
  • Supports stable gas delivery to the midstream network.
  • Enables modular, scalable field development.

Coal Bed Methane System (CBM)

Coal Bed Methane (CBM) — also called Coal Seam Gas (CSG) — is natural gas (mostly methane) that is absorbed onto the surface of coal seams deep underground. To release this gas, water must first be removed (dewatering phase), which lowers pressure in the coal seam. As pressure drops, methane absorbs from the coal and starts to flow with the produced water. Because the gas flows at low pressure and variable rate, compression is essential to move it through pipelines and processing facilities.

A Gas End in a CBM system serves to:

  • Lower the back pressure at the wellhead to encourage continuous gas desorption.
  • Boost gas pressure so it can enter the gathering and transportation pipelines.
  • Handle wet gas streams containing water vapor and small liquid droplets.
  • Maintain flow as reservoir pressure naturally declines over time.

Advantages of Using a Compressor in a Coal Bed Methane System:

  • Maximizes gas recovery by maintaining low wellhead pressure.
  • Enable continuous production even at declining reservoir pressure.
  • Reduces flaring and venting, improving environmental performance.
  • Provides stable pressure and flow to gathering systems.
  • Allows modular expansion as more wells come online.

Boil Off Gas in Non-LNG Systems

Whenever a cryogenic or refrigerated liquid (like LPG, ethylene, ammonia, or liquid hydrogen) is stored, a small portion of the liquid evaporates due to heat ingress through insulation, product movement or loading/unloading, or pressure drop in the storage tank.

This vapor is called boil-off gas (BOG), and if it’s not managed, it raises tank pressure and can cause safety relief valves to open or product loss. The BOG compressor keeps the system in balance by:

  • Removing vapor from the tank to control pressure
  • Compressing it for: Recondensation back into liquid, Recycling to a process or pipeline, Fuel use, or Safe destruction (flare/oxidizer).

Essentially, it ensures stable tank pressure and zero venting.

Advantages of Using a Compressor in Non-LNG BOG Systems:

  • Maintains tank pressure within safe limits.
  • Prevents product loss and environmental emissions.
  • Allows energy recovery (by recycling or reusing vapor).
  • Protects storage integrity and system safety.
  • Enables steady operation of refrigerated plants.
